In the May issue of Outside magazine, amongst the coveted positions of Gear Designer, and Adventure Consultant, I was thrilled to see Sustainability Director was included as one of the 50 best jobs. The article mentions how many Fortune 500 companies are recognizing the need for more CSOs. Those with MBAs can command a yearly salary from $65,000 to well over $100,000.
Wondering how you can work towards becoming a CSO? We have a fantastic Sustainability Coordinator, Kai Abelkis, within the Responsible World Citizen community. You can find mention of his work all over Google. I would love for Kai to give us his recommendation for how to pursue a career in this field.
Interesting, and a rather encouraging bit of news. However two points immediately cross my mind:
-- most CSR practitioners don't believe there is a long term need for a CSO. Rather that sustainability needs to be embedded into all aspects rather than bolted onto the side.
-- from the Triple Bottom Line approach, the top salaries shouldn't be commanded by people JUST with MBAs.
It is truly fascinating watching how all this is unfolding! And if Kai does do a write up of his recommendations it will make very interesting reading.
I would also be interested in seeing such a summary, especially in regard to long term career prospects. In other words, is this a position which seems to be set to become at least a semi permanent aspect of the sustainability field and/or corporate structure? Waiting to see what Kai has to say (hint, hint) :)
